What is acao
ACAO works to foster inclusivity, understanding, and prosperity by delivering programs that address barriers to education, employment, mental health, and social participation — while promoting diversity and cultural heritage through events, festivals, and community initiatives. As an umbrella organization representing more than 50 African and Caribbean ethno cultural groups, ACAO equips its member associations and the broader community with tools and opportunities for meaningful engagement in civic and community life.
A core focus of ACAO is youth development, particularly through service and skill-building. The Unity Through Service (UTS) Youth Placement Program provides young people aged12–30 with structured volunteer and leadership experiences, capacity-building workshops, and opportunities to develop communication, problem-solving, and social innovation skills, all while contributing positively to their communities.
In addition to service and leadership development, ACAO promotes sport as a vehicle for youth empowerment. The African Hockey Program, run in partnership with community volunteers and sponsors, is designed to introduce Black and racialized youth to hockey, helping break down barriers to participation in the sport. The program offers opportunities for children and youth to play hockey at no cost, including equipment, ice time, and coaching — combining athletic skill development with life skills and community connection.
Through cultural initiatives, advocacy, youth programs, and partnerships, ACAO plays a vital role in strengthening community ties and creating opportunities for African Canadians to thrive socially, economically, and culturally in Ottawa and beyond.
